Why Good Dental Health is Important

According to research, tooth decay is among the most widespread recurring childhood diseases in the US. Children below 17 years old are the ones most affected by it and about half of all first graders have decayed teeth. In order for your child to be free of dental health problems, it’s important to start taking them to their dentist for regular checkups as early as possible. Early dental visits can detect dental problems at the onset and treat them before they become a major concern.

Records obtained from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research shows that 52 million school hours are lost every year due to dental health issues in children. It’s a major reason that kids miss school. This is an alarming issue and it’s imperative that parents teach their kids how to maintain good oral hygiene at an early age. Review the routine below which was formulated by the ADHA to promote good oral hygiene in kids:

  1. Clean your baby’s gums using water soaked baby cloth after feeding to stimulate the gums and remove food particles.
  2. When your child is 2-3 years old, teach them how to brush their teeth properly. When they’re already 8, teach them how to floss.
  3. Take your child to a dentist for early detection of cavities in their milk teeth and other abnormalities.
  4. Encourage your child to be open to expressing themselves especially if they have fear of dental visits. Be patient with them and try to create a more positive image of dentists.
  5. If your drinking water does not have fluoride, discuss this with your dentist. They may recommend fluoride supplements.
  6. Ask your child’s dentist how you can safeguard your child’s teeth against tooth decay. They may recommend dental sealants.
